Video Games - My Dad Was Right

Image
I do not remember exactly how old I was when I got my first computer. It was somewhere between 4 and 7 years old, and I feel like it was closer to 4. I know I could read fairly well, but I started reading long before kindergarten so that does not provide me a frame of reference. I remember my first computer vividly though. My Dad gave me a Tandy 1000.  This dream machine ran on a DOS operating system from a 5 1/4 inch floppy disk. Two drives were in place so you could boot on one and run programs from the other. I vividly remember playing Robot Wars, Marble Madness, and King's Quest from those floppies. I also remember learning how to program in BASIC and the big softcover books full of thousands of lines of code which allowed me to write my own text adventure games. I was hooked on The Vampire Wakes at Midnight even though the text scared me to death. It is probably where I came to appreciate imagination driven gaming. I think Dad expected me to have an edge in life with an early

Heroes are defined by their Villains

Before I get into the meat and potatoes of today's comic book epiphany, I want to preempt my main message by saying that this observation comes from no greater qualification than being a consumer of content. I have no writing credits to my name. I have no comic book experience beyond being an avid reader for many years. For the five people who might read this, keep my lack of qualification in mind and know that this opinion of mine is balanced by the fact that I do not have, as an example, Rob Liefeld's track record for successfully writing and drawing comic books.  The big two, Marvel and DC, are committing the same mistake repeatedly. All of the compelling villains are being humanized and turned into heroes or antiheroes. This mistake is costly because rather than improving a comic book by showing another side of an already compelling character it instead takes depth away from the primary reason most people read comics - the heroes. Allow me to try and demonstrate through a

June Comic Books in Review

I spent $224.50 on the comic books that I read this month. I regret not putting in the key issues, variant covers, and speculation books I invested in into my tracking. That number exists and I know what it is. Of course I do. There is no way I am this fanatical about analyzing my comics without having a spreadsheet to track every dollar and dime I earn and where it goes. I am ashamed enough of the $224.50. That other number... I do not want to talk about it, but it does have as lot to do with why I cut back a bit this month.  New Releases Basilisk #1 - I like urban fantasy as a genre. I enjoy stories about Gods and Mythology. I am a big Cullen Bunn fan. There is a reason for that. For my tastes, he does not disappoint. I went into the book without reading any spoilers or previews (why do I do a show that spoils comics?) and just really enjoyed the read.  Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #1 - The premise here is amazing and will probably make its way to the movies eventually: W
